Modifications for various styles
For all modifications, you begin by cutting of the padded shoulder section from the top of the center back
pattern. To create side vents, add extra fabric to accommodate. The easiest way to do this to add 8" to the side panel. The easiest way to do
it is to use a roll of paper(toilette paper, tractor printer paper, paper towels, ticket rolls, etc.), and pin it to the side panel pattern. To add
a center back vent, simply add a roll of paper down the fold line of the center back panel to create a new fold line.

You end up with a paper pattern piece that is laid on the fold to cut out the entire top section in one piece.

Sew the third side closed, and then sew the detail lines(quilting) as the pattern of vest calls for or if you make an error incorperate it into
the design. Errors can be frustrating but some of my best designs have happened because something didn't work out as planned, the sewing machine
leaked oil, the serger ate part of something, or what ever.

sew up both sides, turn right side out, and insert the batting.

If you are an inexperienced sewer, it is easier to cut the padded shoulder section off, sew on the side panels, and
then sew on the padded shoulder section, rather then trying to make a perfect square corner when inserting the side panels.

Creating Vents
1.
Begin by pinning the padded edges good side down, of the lower vest to the upper vest piece. Mark the center of the back with
a pin. I usually use a pin with a colored bead at the end so it cannot be confused with the other pins. The pins should end at the edge of the
padding as shown in 2.

To create the side vent pin down about 2 inches from the edge of the padding(3) then bring the fabric back to almost
the padded edge(note: if you are making only the side vent, you take your center pin(shown in red) and pin to the center back, and pin down
entire back)

Pin down just beyond the edge of the side vent fold(6)and then pin down the center pin(with the bead)to the center back of the
lower back of the center of the upper back padded section.
7.
Pull the remaining fabric to the sides and pin down the ends of the folds(7. blue pins)and pin down all remaining fabric and
sew.
I know the above instructions are a bit confusing, if you could just pin the lower back to the upper shoulder padded section,
the construction would look like this.
You can do it this way if you finish the bottom edge of the upper shoulder padded section, and sew along the seam line of the
bottom of the upper shoulder section.
